Central Illinois Memorable Barn Wedding

Alex and Nikki’s wedding is one of the most memorable weddings we have done for a multitude of reasons!!  First, this bride says “You can never have too many flowers!”  We agree with Nikki and loved creating her gorgeous floral vision.  Because of heavy rains in the early  morning, the ceremony was moved inside the barn, but the sun came out and they were still able to proceed with the rest of their plans for the day.  Second, about 2 a.m. in the morning my husband suffered a heart attack and we will never forget how family and friends rallied around us and helped set up the wedding and reception decor.  Third, the venue owner had some bizarre expectations even expecting us to place all the table linens for her!!  We are so thankful that in spite of the challenges, everything came together beautifully!!

Alex and Nikki  celebrated their one year anniversary of being together at Harpole’s Heartland Lodge where they were hiking, fishing and four-wheeling.  As they stopped back at the lodge for a break, Alex told Nikki he  needed to fix something on the four wheeler, but what he really did was  create a wonderful surprise for her.  He led her to  their favorite bluff and as they rounded the corner, there was a basket with a whole picnic spread on a blanket in front of a beautiful lookout.  Alex got down on one knee and popped the question!  Nikki had no idea and hadn’t suspected a thing!!

Nikki was not looking forward to dress shopping as she feared she would end up at  dozens of bridal salons searching for the dress that would work for her.  As she started looking through plastic bag after plastic bag of white dresses, they seemed to blend together.   But after she tried on a few different styles, she started to narrow it down and about 10 dresses in she knew at that instant the dress she had on was it!!  She had heard of people having that experience but never believed she would be one of them.  She was able to wear her mother’s veil which was very sentimental for them.

Alex and Nikki are both laid back and love the outdoors.  When deciding on the theme/style for their wedding it was important to have a place where all of their family and friends could be there to truly celebrate their union.  They chose a mix of rustic and classic which suits their personalities.  Rain or shine (which it did both on their big day) they were going to have it outside and after the ceremony in the barn, they were able to move everything outside so guests could enjoy the games they had planned.

Nikki chose a blend of bright and cheerful blooms for her wedding bouquets and ceremony decor as well as her reception table decor.

Thinking about their favorite memory from their wedding day, Nikki stated “I can’t describe how full my heart felt when we walked into our reception and were surrounded by friends and family.  We made our way through a tent filled with people that traveled, gave up their time and incurred expenses in order to be at our wedding and help celebrate our marriage.  I felt so loved and overwhelmed with happiness.”

Nikki’s advice to couples just starting to plan their wedding: Get advice on vendors and venues from people who have personally used them or know others who have done business with them.  She states that reviews can be manipulated online by vendors paying a fee to clear bad reviews which is why she feels it is important to get contact information from former clients of the vendor and reach out to them.  Some of their vendors went above and beyond (caterer and florist), and others were a huge disappointment (unfortunately the venue owners).

Looking back Nikki says her biggest regret was thinking she would be able to tie up a few loose ends the morning of her wedding.  She did end up getting everything done but wasn’t able to relax and celebrate with her bridesmaids the morning of.  She encourages other brides to make this a priority!!  She also stated that you can never have too many flowers.  It absolutely made the space feel so special and bridal.  “I gave Nancy my vision with a couple pictures and what she created out of it was more than I could have ever imagined!”   Photos by Ernst Jacobson Photgraphy.

What Was The Most Popular Wedding Color of 2016?

Burgundy

As we look back at our 2016 central Illinois weddings, wine-burgundy-cranberry shades of flowers were chosen by eight of our brides making it the most popular wedding shade out of the forty-five weddings we created bouquets for.  That is not surprising considering Marsala was 2015 color of the year and here in the midwest we aren’t as quick to embrace the newest style.

Plum

Coming in second place was plum with six of our central Illinois brides choosing plum colored blooms for their bridal bouquets.

Peach

We had three shades tie for third place – Peach, Pink and White.  Five of our 2016 brides chose peach shades for their wedding bouquets.

Pink

Another five of our central Illinois brides chose pink flowers for their bridal bouquets.

White

Classic white is always in and five our 2016 brides picked all white blooms for their wedding flowers.

Blush

Coming in fourth place we have blush – this surprised me as it seemed like I had worked with blush roses most of the wedding season!!  We actually did use a lot of blush flowers mixed in with the burgundy colored bouquets and our favorite blush roses we used the most were Quicksand and White O’hara garden rose.   We had four brides choose blush shades of flowers for their wedding bouquets.

Blue and Rust

Blue and rust colored flowers tied for fifth place with three brides choosing each color.

Yellow, Coral, Red and Lavender

Yellow and coral tied for sixth place with two brides choosing yellow flowers and two choosing coral.   And last but not least we had one bride choose red and one bride choose lavender.
We so enjoyed working with each and every bride and creating their floral vision for each of them.  We are greatly humbled once again by the lovely reviews our brides took time to leave for us and in so doing winning us “The Knot Best Of Weddings 2017”!!  Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.  While I loved many of the bouquets we created this year, I think my most favorite flowers I worked with this year was the antique lavender wedding – something rare and beautiful (see below right)!!!

We already have twenty weddings booked for 2017 and we are looking forward to spring and the returning wedding season.  However, after doing fifty events this past year,  many two and three per weekend, we are restructuring how we do business in 2017.   To be able to fully enjoy and give our full attention to each wedding, we are only booking one per weekend starting now in 2017;  thus we now have a $1,000 minimum to book with us.
We have met so many wonderful people and feel so blessed to be able to use our God-given talents to bring pleasure to others by working with God’s glorious flowers and to be able to use part of our profits to fund our mission trips to Mexico.
Happy New Year to all, Nancy

How Did Jimmy Propose To Erica?

When Jimmy made plans to propose to Erica, he included his seven nieces and nephews in popping the big question.  He cleverly came up with the idea for each on of them to hold a sign with the seven magical words { Erica – Will – You – Marry – Our – Uncle – Jimmy?.}
IMG_20160402_134316481paint650
How cute is that!!  And of course Jimmy knew there was no way Erica was going to say no to him and all those special neices and nephews.  What a fun surprise and of course Erica said YES!!

They say that March winds bring April showers – well there were no showers for this April 2, 2016 wedding but there sure were some mighty winds left over from March!  With wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour we are seriously amazed that S & J Maurer photography was able to capture these beautiful outdoor photos!!

Erica (Saathoff) Dehm teaches 5th grade at Westview Grade School in Fairbury, Illinois and Jimmy Dehm is known to many as he takes part in racing, so it was a must to go out to the Speedway (which is across the road from the school) for a photo.

Erica and Jimmy were married at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Gilman.  The reception was held at The Walton Center in Fairbury, Illinois.  Erica wanted bright and colorful flowers for her wedding bouquets to coordinate with the coral bridesmaid dresses.  Pictured below is the floral spray that decorated the head table by Fancy Florals By Nancy a Fairbury, Illinois wedding florist.

Erica rented several old jars from Old Oaks Vintage Rentals in Lexington, IL and Fancy Florals By Nancy filled the jars with bright flowers to coordinate with the wedding bouquets.

Nancy is absolutely fabulous to work with! There were many things that I felt like I worried about for the wedding, but the flowers were definitely not one of them! The 8 Best Flower Girl Accessories

Trying to decide what to have your flower girl carry?

Perhaps you know exactly what you want for your bridal bouquet, ceremony decor and centerpiece arrangements, but just can’t quite decide when it comes to your sweet little flower girl ~ Here are our top eight suggestions for floral accessories for the flower girl – and it doesn’t have to be something to carry either!
Flower Girl Baskets
  1. Basket of petals is still the most popular choice our brides use for their flower girls, but sometimes the venue doesn’t want fresh petals on the aisle, or the bride doesn’t want to have to think about getting someone to pick up those petals ~  what to do then?
flower girl kissing balls, pomanders baby's breath pomander, flower girl pomander
2.  Floral pomanders or kissing balls, are becoming very popular and they can be as simple as baby’s breath, or made of colorful carnations, mums or roses.  The balls are available in small sizes for young and medium and large for older girls.
 flower girl garland
3.  Floral garland for something different!  Of course, this only works if you have two flower girls.  If you want something other than the traditional flower girl posy bouquet or basket of petals – think about trying this!
Floral Wand  flower girl wand, floral wand
4. Floral wand – these are becoming increasingly popular also.  What flower girl wouldn’t love to carry one of these!!
flower girl basket flower girl basket ivy decorated basket, flower girl basket
5.  Decorated Basket – If you love the idea of a basket, but aren’t sure you will be throwing petals, how about a basket filled with flowers, or ivy greens wrapped around a basket handle?  No work involved for your little miss, just carry and look pretty!!

6.  Floral Crowns are becoming very popular these days for both brides, bridesmaids & flower girls.  They can be as simple and sweet as a baby’s breath crown or more elaborate with roses & wax flowers, or other blooms of your choice.
flower girl hair clip  Flower girl hair clip  floral headband, flower girl headband
7. Floral hair clips, combs & bands make an easy choice for an economical accessory for the little gal with enough hair to wear these.  Oh the possibilities are endless!
flower girl bouquets, small posy bouquets  flower girl posy
8. Posy bouquets are still a very popular choice for little” miss divas” who want to emulate the bride and are often miniature versions of the bridesmaids.  These will leave your sweet gal dreaming of her own wedding someday!

Looking back on 2015 and ahead to 2016

2015 – Such A  Memorable Year For Us!!

2015 was a very exciting year for us here at Fancy Florals By Nancy.  It started out with us getting the news that we had won The Knot Best of Weddings as well as Wedding Wire’s Couples Choice Awards!! This was a huge achievement & honor for us and very humbling as we read through the many lovely reviews our 2014 brides had left for us. These awards are chosen by the number and quality of reviews left by clients; so –  many, many thanks to all our past brides who took the time to leave us a review!!

Florists’ Review released the winners of the Picture Perfect Wedding Contest in their April 2015 issue.  We had submitted Derek and Molly Bachtold’s wedding photos (not really expecting to win – but someone has to, right?) and we were floored when we opened the April issue and saw that one of the photos we had submitted (photo by Fox & Hound) made the magazine!!  We certainly weren’t a winner, but we did get our  boutonniere photo and our name in a National Magazine! Wow…pretty exciting!!

As we start our 5th year in business we marvel at how God has led us along this journey to where we are now.  We have met so many wonderful couples and their families and it has been a joy to work together with them creating their vision for their wedding flowers.  The challenges we have encountered were just what we needed to make us dive in and learn new things and to also prepare us to take the next step along this journey.
Wedding Show 2016 110p

Looking ahead to 2016

We started out the year by having a vendor booth at The Elegant Bridal Expo.  It was great fun and we had a good time meeting and talking with many newly engaged couples.  We had surprisingly good success,  much better than the Dream Bridal Show we did two years ago. We made nine appointments for consultations right at the show and we have had some additional contacts since.  The last two weeks have been very busy for us meeting with brides for consultations and figuring up their price proposals.  2016 is shaping up to be a very busy year for us!!
2016BOW_VendorProfile_Gold_500x500e_edited-1
At the end of December we received notice that we had again won The Knot Best of Weddings for 2016 and then just a week ago came the notice from Wedding Wire that we had been chosen again for the Couples Choice Awards 2016!!  We are grateful and again humbled by our 2015 couples who took the time to leave us such lovely reviews and we want to sincerely thank each of you!!

Probably the single most profound impression from 2015 was our December trip to Casa Vida Y Esperanza in Magdalena, Mexico.  We had at least one new inquiry every day (sometimes 2) about wedding flowers while we were there.  It was amazing to us and reaffirmed our belief that this is what God is asking us to do – using some of the proceeds from Fancy Florals and go help and serve those at CVE in some small way.  It has been a privilege and blessing for us and we thank our brides for making it possible!!  “With God All Things Are Possible”  Mathew 19:26

Sarah said… Nancy is an amazing florist and person! She is organized, professional, creative, and one of the sweetest ladies you could ever hope to meet. My mom and and I drove to Fairbury to meet her and I could immediately tell she was not only talented, but someone I could count on to deliver the vision I had for my wedding flowers. She listened to my ideas and added her own creative style. Her attention to detail, excellent taste/style and dedication to her craft make her a true gem. The flowers could not have turned out more beautifully and I would recommend Fancy Florals by Nancy to anyone looking for truly magnificent floral creations. The pictures don’t lie – take a look and work with Nancy. You won’t be disappointed. She is the best!  Sarah Peters Hevner 2015

What Colors Are Trending For 2016?

A Softer Take On Color For 2016

For the first time, the blending of two shades are chosen as the Pantone color of the year.  It feels like deja vu for those of us old enough to remember the 80’s, with Pantone’s selection of Rose Quartz and Serenity Blue!  Actually the shades chosen for this year are a touch softer than the country blue and mauve which dominated the market three decades ago.
ce52420e6ca8e79e00b201356032fba5
Rose quartz is a gentle tone that conveys compassion and Serenity blue is as weightless and airy as the sky above us.  Both colors offer feelings of calm and tranquility in the midst of turbulence around us. For the bride this brings a beautiful soft touch in fabrics as well as flowers for bridal bouquets, boutonniere and corsages.

Rose Quartz and Serenity demonstrate an inherent balance between a warmer embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil blue shade, reflecting connection and wellness as well as a soothing sense of order and peace.  Blended with soft green and gray foliage, wedding bouquets created from flowers in these shades will present a calming balance to the ceremony.

Rose quartz and Serenity blue are appealing in all finishes, matte, metallic and glossy, the engaging combo joins easily with other mid-tones including greens and purples, rich browns, and all shades of yellow and pink. Add in silver or hot brights for more splash and sparkle.  Source: Pantone Color of The Year 2016

Hydrangeas and delphinium are two wonderful sources of the soft blue of serenity and there is a wonderful selection of rose shades found in roses, ranunculus and many others for wedding bouquets, boutonniere and  reception centerpiece arrangements.  These pastel shades would be perfect for a spring wedding!

Outstanding Central Illinois Wedding Vendors

 Autumn Harvest Themed Wedding

Garrett and Maggie Zano were married in an outdoor ceremony at Ewing Manor on October 24, 2015.  The  windy day, holding a threat of rain, provided some challenges, but thanks to these great vendors, this couple was in good hands!  They were thrilled with Greg Linder Photography, Palace Events, Baxter’s, Fancy Florals By Nancy and of course the enchanting Ewing Manor.
 507p
Garrett and Maggie love the outdoors and woods in particular.  Maggie was born in October and adores the color of the trees turning, crisp cool air and decorations including pumpkins.  They are also very big fans of the Renaissance Fairies and wanted to incorporate the medieval/renaissance feel which made Ewing Manor and the harvest theme perfect.  She explained that it also birthed the idea for her flower crown which she felt was the perfect touch for their special day.

When we asked Maggie what made her fall in love with Garrett, she stated that she knows everyone says this but for her it’s absolutely true – she fell in love with him the night they met!!  “I fell in love with his voice first as we shared a stimulating conversation by skipping over superficial topics like food and favorites, and diving right into deep discussions of space and time, life on other planets, and other oddities of the universe.  He both challenges and comforts me!”

Garrett had planned a special surprise for Maggie complete with a fairy-tale picnic with champagne at Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park.  He had the day off of work, but not Maggie so when he picked her up after work she was exhausted and declined his offer of a drive and picnic.  After arriving home, she noticed the champagne in the fridge, and the cogs in her head started to turn….She quickly threw on her favorite dress and pushed Garrett out the door.  By getting a late start, the sunlight had closed for Skyline Drive, so they went to Great Falls National Park and took a hike that seemed to take forever to Maggie.  Coming to a clearing, Garrett finally got down on one knee and said the four magical words.  Maggie was crying too hard to answer, but Garrett understood her sobs were a yes!!  Engaged!!!
October 24, 2015 079ep October 24, 2015 065p
Maggie shared that all of her vendors did such a great job!  “I used Palace Events for my tent and other rental equipment and they were wonderful.  They work with you every step of the way and do set up and take down.  The tent was magical and the tables just right.  Fancy Florals By Nancy created breathtaking wedding bouquets, corsages, boutonnieres and a perfect floral crown.  Nancy also did last minute floral touches to our DIY table decor when we found some extra money in the budget!!  Baxter’s event planner Natalie was amazing to work with – I had many last minute changes which she catered to and the food was incredible!
484
Maggie loved her wedding photos by Greg Linder – the above pose is her favorite!!  Her advice for newly engaged couples?  Enjoy it together; go on tastings, visit vendors together – you will fall even more in love.  Don’t try to micromanage and let little things upset you because in the end they really do not matter!  Her most important advice?  Eat before you go – you are filled with nerves and happiness so hunger is a second thought.  I think I only sat at my plate for two minutes!

Do this to make sure your wedding day goes smoothly

Nick and Sondra Urish were married August 22, 2015 at the lovely Metamora Fields Golf Club in a beautiful outdoor ceremony.  These stunning photos were taken by Kara Kamienski Photography.  As far as the couple knew, everything went perfectly smooth thanks to their team of family and friends who were there to make it happen!!  Sondra’s advice to couples planning their own weddings is to make sure multiple people know your plan for the day so that when vendors arrive and have questions they can help out and you can relax and focus on getting ready.  Designate family and friends to help out in the days prior and the day of so you can enjoy every bit of the day.

Sondra also encourages engaged couples to not stress over all the planning, and to make sure you have fun with it!  She found it helpful to have an account on Wedding Wire and used their to-do list to help her keep track of what should be done and when.

Among the moments that stick out in her memory were seeing her husband’s emotion when he saw her for the first look orchestrated by the photographer.  She stated how much they enjoyed having those first few moments to themselves.  Second was when they sealed the deal with a kiss.  Third was taking photos with their awesome bridal party & photographer.  And fourth was their reception and seeing all of their guests having such a great time.   Everyone understands how quickly the wedding day goes by so enjoy every minute of the day with your friends and family and most importantly with your groom.  Make sure you take some time for a SECOND slow dance with your husband and to enjoy the day and moment in time with him!!

Nick and Sondra met at U of I in agronomy club.  They are both from die-hard Illini families, so Nick planned his marriage proposal to Sondra to coincide with Illini 2014 Homecoming.  As they both currently had siblings attending U of I, Nick gathered them and their friends together for dinner and drinks.   They walked back to the quad where Nick had lined up the perfect spot to propose – in front of Foellinger Auditorium on the south side of the main quad.   He had his brother delay the group with a stop to see the newly renovated Lincoln Hall, so they could wait until everyone else was off the quad where Nick was planning to propose.   After Sondra said “yes” Nick informed her that he had lined up her parents and sister along with his parents to join them all in celebration at tailgate.  The Illini even squeaked out a win at the big game!  It was the perfect spot for the proposal because they both began their journey to where they are today as a couple at the U of I and would never have met each other if it wasn’t for their ties to agriculture at the university.

The reception was held at the gorgeous Fields Ballroom on the second level of Metamora Fields Club House where the seating capacity is 400 and the staff does an excellent job.  The DJ was Buster from Extreme DJ’s & Lighting who provided a fun evening for everyone.  Flowers were done by Fancy Florals By Nancy.  Sondra chose shades of peach and cream for her bridal bouquets to offer a contrast to the navy blue bridesmaid dresses.  She also chose some choice blooms in cream and peach for reception centerpiece arrangements.
