A “Romantic-Vintage” Wedding Styled-Shoot!

This vintage styled photo shoot was born from my desire to do some re-branding for our wedding floral business.  I think because I have been a gardener for so long I am drawn to the natural, lush garden style bouquets that are becoming so popular.  A styled-shoot was a good way to try out this vision, get some photos as well as work on getting published.  I didn’t need to look far for a photographer as I had worked with Lauren on a shoot last fall and knew first hand what a talented photographer she is.

Because both Adore Bridal Specialty and Spruce Wedding Rentals (formerly Something old Event Rentals) had agreed to partner with us we realized the shoot would best take place close to the Washington/Morton area.   As we scouted around, we were delighted with what we found – in a Washington park this arching branched tree to decorate as a backdrop and the Danforth House with it’s lovely large porch which we initially chose as a rain back-up plan.
The vision for the wedding flowers was pastel, romantic blooms like Quicksand, White O’hara and Upper Secret roses with soft green helleborus to create a soft blend of color.  We added some contrasting darker blooms like black scabiosa, burgundy peonies and blue clematis tucked in for depth and a touch of mystery.   Ferny white nigella added great texture and the addition of white sweet peas and cascading green foliage finished it into a lush garden style bouquet.  Mixing these luscious blooms together was like putting together ingredients for a yummy desert!!

Andrea from Adore Bridal was so nice and helpful.  We sent her our inspiration board and described the vintage feel we wanted for our shoot.  We fell in love with the first gown she brought out for us to view!    Altar Ego Spalon did the girls hair and make-up for a beautiful effect.
Lauren had a great experience with Bremer Jewelry and Spruce Wedding Rentals from her last photo shoot so we were happy they partnered with us again.  The table and mismatched chairs are part of Spruce Wedding Rentals extensive collection.
East To West Studio custom created this lovely one-of-a-kind stationary just for us.
Thank you so much to our models who endured the 90 degree heat and did such a great job!  Our bride and groom Jeni & Stan got to practice for their real wedding which will happen in September.  Emily (blue gown) got married on New Years Eve last year and Lauren (mauve gown) took time from her own wedding planning to help.  She was married just a few weeks after the photo shoot.  All of the models are/were our future/past clients.
The blue and mauve bridesmaid gowns caught our eye in the window of Adore Bridal and were exactly the soft colors and filmy fabric we had envisioned for our vintage, romantic styled shoot.   The bridal bouquets photographed beautifully against these gorgeous gowns and they went perfectly with flowing hand-dyed silk ribbons adorning the bridal bouquets.
Wedding cake
Tessa Herr of Bojeannies created this beautiful gilded wedding cake and the gold bar cart  from Spruce Wedding Rentals was perfect  to display and serve from.
We had a beautiful rain-free day for our photo shoot and didn’t really need our rain back-up plan, but who could pass up the opportunity to take photos at the beautiful Danforth House which the Martin’s so graciously extended to us .  The porch and wicker furniture also made the perfect backdrop to photograph the vintage carrom board game.

Doesn’t this look enticing to have time to sit on this beautiful porch and play games – so reminiscent of simpler times.

The carrom board was my grandmother’s and the vintage croquet set as well as the vintage glassware  was handed down from my husband’s family.  It was a great opportunity to pull these old items out of storage and put them to use!

Who can resist a game of croquet on the lawn??

Every side of the Danforth House had another pleasant surprise and photo opportunity to photograph the models with their bridal bouquets.
The grande finale came when Mr. Martin offered to start up one of his vintage cars and bring it around for a fantastic get-away-car photo!!  How could it get any better?  It was like the icing on the cake!!
The whole evening was a magical experience for us and we had great fun.  Thanks again to our vendor team, models, and our support helpers,  Kendra & Laine Fehr and Betsy Zimmerman – everyone did such a great job!! How To Infuse Your Personality Into Your Wedding

For Chris and Amanda Highland, having their reception at Hancock Stadium Club was a given considering Chris played football for the Redbirds.  However when we asked Amanda what her advice would be to other couples planning their weddings, she replied “Find ways to infuse your hobbies and personalities into your special day even if it means abandoning tradition; Come up with your own personal traditions!”
Amanda and Chris
Chris and Amanda personalized their wedding reception with hand-crafted items they made from wood pallets.

Among the items they created were boxes which they brought to us to fill with flowers and place lanterns on.

They also created a backdrop for their cake table and a picture display board.

The wedding photos were taken by Vivid Studios.  They didn’t let a little rain stop them or dampen their joy and it worked out perfectly that the rain stopped between the ceremony and reception and they could take photos on the field.  The table linens were by The Event Experience.

The Hancock Stadium Club is a wonderful venue for a wedding reception and the staff is great to work with. From a vendor’s perspective it is one of the easiest set-up locations with their large elevator and carts and the staff pitched right in and helped load and unload!  We really appreciated this as those wood boxes with the wet foam and flowers weighed in at 25 pounds!!

We were so excited for Chris and Amanda when she informed us just a few days after their wedding that Chris had been drafted by the New Orlean Saints!!

For her bridal bouquets Amanda chose a mix of freesia, stock, roses and eucalyptus. It’s such a joy for us when brides are so excited over their wedding flowers and Amanda was no exception; it was so much fun to present her bridal bouquet to her!!  Amanda’s mother brought us lace from her own wedding dress which we wrapped Amanda’s bridal bouquet with.

Words of wisdom from Amanda –  Brides, share you wedding vision early on with those who will be helping plan (MOB, MOG, MOH, Groom, etc.) Be sure to have your wedding planners (official or unofficial) at the meetings with your vendors so they can build relationships. Your bridal party and family want your day to be perfect but they all have their own idea of what that means. Come together for a meeting of the minds to discuss how you envision the day going, specifically a hour by hour breakdown.

What Colors Are Trending For 2016?

A Softer Take On Color For 2016

For the first time, the blending of two shades are chosen as the Pantone color of the year.  It feels like deja vu for those of us old enough to remember the 80’s, with Pantone’s selection of Rose Quartz and Serenity Blue!  Actually the shades chosen for this year are a touch softer than the country blue and mauve which dominated the market three decades ago.

Rose quartz is a gentle tone that conveys compassion and Serenity blue is as weightless and airy as the sky above us.  Both colors offer feelings of calm and tranquility in the midst of turbulence around us. For the bride this brings a beautiful soft touch in fabrics as well as flowers for bridal bouquets, boutonniere and corsages.

Rose Quartz and Serenity demonstrate an inherent balance between a warmer embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil blue shade, reflecting connection and wellness as well as a soothing sense of order and peace.  Blended with soft green and gray foliage, wedding bouquets created from flowers in these shades will present a calming balance to the ceremony.

Rose quartz and Serenity blue are appealing in all finishes, matte, metallic and glossy, the engaging combo joins easily with other mid-tones including greens and purples, rich browns, and all shades of yellow and pink. Add in silver or hot brights for more splash and sparkle.  Source: Pantone Color of The Year 2016

Hydrangeas and delphinium are two wonderful sources of the soft blue of serenity and there is a wonderful selection of rose shades found in roses, ranunculus and many others for wedding bouquets, boutonniere and  reception centerpiece arrangements.  These pastel shades would be perfect for a spring wedding!

How Did This Groom Propose?

Luke and Erin ~ April 2014

Erin received a romantic surprise while vacationing with Luke’s family at their lake house in Michigan and while playing a game of golf with Luke’s brother and sister-in-law.  As the game progressed to the 7th hole, which was a beautiful spot overlooking the lake, Erin wondered what was going on as Luke’s brother played out of turn and rushed off the green leaving Luke to get down on one knee where he popped the question!!   Erin  joyfully accepted as Luke’s sister-in-law was capturing the entire scenario on video.  Erin was further surprised as they brought out champagne for all to celebrate the happy occasion!!
 Romantic Proposal
Luke and Erin met at Wesleyan University and were friends for three years before having their first date at Destihl.  They currently both work in downtown Chicago; Luke as an attorney for government licensing and Erin in research at NYU.  Erin said she had been planning her wedding for four years pinning photos of her dream wedding to a secret Pinterest board.
 Peacock Wedding Colors
What is Luke and Erin’s advice to couples just getting engaged?  No other than a famous Chicago voting mantra, “start early and often”!!  First of all, get your date picked, then create a timeline check-off and get planning!   “All of our friends are getting married” Erin explains.  “We had 5 weddings to attend (including our own) in 7 weeks time from SW Michigan, Chicago to Boston, which made us very, very busy attending bridal showers and related events.  We were so glad that we had so much done for our wedding ahead of time.
Evelyn Chapel Wedding

The wedding was held at the Evelyn Chapel where Erin chose simple white containers of baby’s breath to complement the pristine beauty of the Chapel on the campus where they met.  Congratulations to this happy couple!

Beautiful reception held at The Chateau Bloomington

The Chateau Bloomington

When we met with Luke and Erin, they had a clear idea of their vision for their wedding flowers.  By using the peacock feathers with the teal bridesmaid dresses, we decided on the rich deep shades of purple, magenta & blue with pops of fresh green to brighten and add contrast to the deeper colors for the bridal bouquets, boutonniere and reception centerpieces.  Erin wanted some of her reception centerpieces to be big, bold and over-the-top, so we created the tall arrangements with showy blooms to make a statement in the venue.

The reception was held at The Chateau Bloomington , a gorgeous, elegant venue where the staff was helpful and easy to work with.

Shades Of Yellow And Grey Decorate This Wedding

First Look Is Bride’s Favorite Memory

Photographer  Sara Maurer took Sean and Amy to McGraw Park and captured the first look in front of this beautiful fountain.  When we asked Amy if she had a favorite memory from her wedding day, she explained it was hard to pinpoint because everything was just perfect but seeing her husband the first time really stands out!  She credits Sara for making them feel so comfortable that they could be perfectly natural in front of the camera.
First Look
Amy decided on her color scheme for her wedding when she was still in college.  She loved the shades of yellow and grey and how they complement each other.  She also felt it was something a little different than she had seen a lot of.  She found her biggest challenge in planning her wedding was second guessing herself as she would compare her wedding plans to all the weddings on Pinterest, Facebook and Instagram and then want to make changes right up to the week before her wedding!!
Yellow and Grey wedding
Yellow and Grey Wedding Bouquet Bouquet Wrap
Because Amy’s grandfather died just two weeks before her wedding, she honored his memory by having her bouquet wrapped with one of his ties.
Yellow and Grey Wedding Decor Reception Centerpiece Wedding Backdrop, Aisle decor
The wedding and reception were held at Doubletree in Bloomington where Kaitlin and her staff took care of all the details.  The wedding was in the courtyard and was decorated by Fancy Florals By Nancy with a decorated wedding arch, ferns, aisle runner and jars of flowers running the length of the aisle.  The tables were decorated with painted wine bottles filled with yellow and cream roses and dahlias and roses under wine glasses with votives on top.  Bojeannies provided various sizes of delicious cupcakes for her guests sweet tooth and Absolute Light and Sound provided a good time for everyone with their selection of songs.

Why Get Married In Fairbury, Illinois?

Why did this Bloomington family choose Fairbury??

When Trey & Hollie were planning their wedding and looking for a venue, they found that the venues that were  available locally on their wedding date of June 13th were not large enough to accommodate their many family and friends.  They were happy to find that Fairbury’s  Walton Center and First Baptist Church both had seating for 450 people.

June 13, 2015 was a lovely warm day, so Megan Ranae Photography was able to capture some beautiful photos in the serene rural countryside around Fairbury.

The Walton Center, a central Illinois venue, is a wonderful charming old building with a rich history in the heart of down-town Fairbury.  It is enjoying renewed popularity as a venue for large gatherings and is a beautiful location for weddings and receptions.

Another Fairbury vendor, Bojeannies, provided a mouth-watering assortment of cupcakes for the reception. The historic Walton Center dazzled with added charm for the event after being decorated by the bride’s mother’s  vintage  collection of glass bottles, cameras, suitcases and much more!!

Nancy was outstanding to work with! She took oodles of time to understand our vision, advise and educate us on flowers, and help us stay within our budget. Her communication was excellent. Her service was a 10 on a scale of 1 – 5 And Our flowers were absolutely GORGEOUS!!! Exactly what we had pictured, and even better!! We took outdoor pictures in VERY hot weather before the wedding. Nancy happened to stop by the church and saw that a couple of the flowers in the brides bouquet were drooping just a bit. She took the bouquet, replaced flowers, and had it back to us before the ceremony. Definitely above and beyond. Nancy is an extremely talented and a joy person! We HIGHLY recommend Fancy Florals by Nancy. -Sherry Semlow June 13, 2015

Why No One Will Forget This Wedding!!

Bohemian Style Wedding

The first time I met together with Pam she described her vision for a simple eco-friendly, bohemian style wedding to be held outdoors at Darrell’s country home and also his place of business “Fairbury Fastener & Supply.”   As she showed me the cotton and lace dresses she found for herself and the bridesmaids (their daughters),  told me about the old church pews they discovered and how Darrell was building a pergola for them to be married under, I could see  this wedding was going to be fun and unique!!
00174p 00110p
Pam had a large collection of vintage aprons, doilies, table cloths and other decor handed down from their families and from yard sales & antique stores that they wanted to incorporate into their wedding.  The pergola which Darrell built holds grape vines that were planted by Darrell’s late father, Gilbert. Darrell & Pam  met with the help of EHarmony and were matched according to a very extensive questioning process.  “Darrell was the first man I dated and…well…it was obviously a good match!” explained Pam.  They had their first date at Famous Dave’s and so decided to have Famous Dave’s cater their wedding reception.

Rain Clouds Gather!

We really believed that the rain would miss us and so we carried on as usual the morning of the wedding.  We had decided that we would get married under the pergola regardless of the weather and we did put up a few tents for guests to stand under even though we had beautiful old church pewsto sit on – which some hardy guests did sit on in the rain with their umbrellas!!

Work Together, Love Together, Play Together

Our motto as a blended family is that we will all work together, love together,  play together and persevere  no matter what is thrown our way!  It was a great lesson for our children when the rain was pounding down and it was time to walk to the pergola for the ceremony –  There were asking, “What should we do?”  We said, “Just keep walking; we are getting married outside as planned!!”  LOL!!  They all loved it and had such a good time.  A wedding nobody will forget!
00220p

Rolling With The Punches

Because of the rain, plan B was put to use and instead of a nearby meadow, the photos were taken in and around Darrell’s place of business ” Fairbury Fastener.”  We think “Images By Whitney” did a wonderful job and the tool shed shop photos added a unique flavor as well as kept the guests dry as they enjoyed the reception!
 00252p  00502p

Wedding Flowers

For her wedding bouquet Pam chose a mix of sophisticated and simple flowers –  using garden roses, stock, Queen Anne’s lace and feverfew.  Feverfew and Queen Anne’s lace made up the bridesmaid’s bouquets and the boutonniere for the guys were made from baby’s breath wrapped in twine.  They used mini green hydrangeas, stock, roses and baby’s breath to fill old bottles and containers to decorate their tables.  The combination of the electic decor, the drenching during the ceremony, and all of their thoughtful touches make this a wedding their guests won’t soon forget!!

Fancy Florals By Nancy, a Fairbury wedding florist, was thrilled for the opportunity to create their wedding bouquets as Nancy grew up a mile down the road from where Darrell grew up and currently lives and is the location for Fairbury Fastener & Supply.  Nancy met Pam when she was the winner of our gift card at the 2014 Prairie Central FFA Home Show.  For more information please visit our website at  www.fancyfloralsbynancy.com or visit our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/fancyfloralsbynancy
