Do You Know What These Wedding Traditions Mean?

Traditions

Something old, something new…

This wedding tradition (old, new, borrowed, blue) is from an old English rhyme.  Here’s what it means and how to incorporate it all into your look.

something old…

The idea is to carry a token of the past into this new phase of your life.  Go for: a locket with a childhood photo or your parents’ wedding portrait; an antique necklace, bracelet, or pair of heirloom earrings; an inherited book of prayers or poems (read from it during the ceremony); a piece of your security blanket or a family quilt sewn into the hem of your dress.

something borrowed…

Marriage is about community, both your tight family unit and your wide support circle.  Give your community a nod by wearing something that belongs to a loved one.  Go for:  your mom’s or sister’s veil; your best friend’s earrings; your niece’s charm bracelet; gloves borrowed from your grandma.

something new…

You are being reborn as a married woman – the idea is to celebrate the novelty.  Go for: brand-new lingerie; a sparkly tiara or pair of barrettes; a daring haircut or color (one that you’ve tested out, of course)!!

something blue…

The color of fidelity, or course!  Go for:  blue toenail polish; baby-blue heels; bluebells scattered in your bouquet or tresses; a navy satin purse; sapphire earrings; your new name monogrammed in blue on the inside of your dress.
